Andre Braugher, the Emmy-winning actor best known for his roles on the television series "Brooklyn Nine-Nine" and "Homicide: Life on the Street," died at the age of 61 on Monday after suffering from a brief illness, his publicist Jennifer Allen confirmed to media outlets.

Beloved Captain Raymond Holt

Braugher was perhaps most recognised in recent years for his portrayal of the deadpan Captain Raymond Holt on the popular police comedy "Brooklyn Nine-Nine" from 2013 to 2021.

Alongside co-star, Andy Samberg. Braugher's character was a fan favourite for his stern but earnest personality.

Outstanding Detective Frank Pembleton

Earlier in his decorated career, Braugher won his first Primetime Emmy in 1998 for Outstanding Lead Actor for playing Detective Frank Pembleton on the critically-praised NBC drama “Homicide: Life on the Street.”

His intense and nuanced performance on the show based on David Simon’s non-fiction novel helped cement Braugher as a standout television actor in the 1990s and 2000s.

Education and acting debut

A graduate of Stanford University and Julliard’s drama program, some of Braugher’s earliest acting credits were in films like “Glory” and television movies such as “Kojak,” before landing his star-making turn on “Homicide.”

He later played roles in other series including “Hack,” “House M.D.,” and “Men of a Certain Age,” while continuing to appear in films like “City of Angels,” “Frequency,” and “The Mist.”

Braugher is survived by his wife Ami Brabson, who guest-starred on “Homicide,” and their three children.
