Veteran Bollywood actor, Junior Mehmood passed away at 67 in Mumbai last night after a battle with stage 4 cancer, reports have confirmed.

Mehmood, born Naeem Sayyed, had a prolific career in the film industry spanning over 50 years and 250 movies. He began as a child star in 1966's "Mohabbat Zindagi Hai" and went on to act in classics like "Naunihal," "Caravan," "Haathi Mere Saathi," and "Hare Rama Hare Krishna" among countless others.

In recent years, Mehmood has been fighting advanced cancer. His condition reportedly worsened significantly in the past few days leading to his demise on Thursday night.

The legacy of Mehmood 

 

Mehmood was given his screen name by comedy legend Mehmood after co-starring with him in 1968's "Suhaag Raat." He also had a brief stint on television in shows like "Pyaar Ka Dard Hai" and "Ek Rishta Saajhedari Ka." Additionally, he produced and directed several Marathi films over the years.

 

Jeetendra and Johnny Lever visit ailing star prior to death

 

The late actor recently expressed a wish to meet long-time co-star Jeetendra. The two acted together extensively in the 1960s, forging a close bond during shoots of films like "Suhaag Raat," "Parivar," "Vishwas," and "Caravan." Jeetendra and fellow veteran Johnny Lever emotionality fulfilled Mehmood's request earlier this week on Tuesday, visiting the ailing celebrity at his Mumbai residence.

Junior Mehmood's funeral will take place today in Santacruz. He is survived by his wife Lata and two sons. The veteran performer's death marks the end of an era in Hindi cinema. He will be dearly missed by friends, family, and legions of fans.
