Ever since the trailer of ‘Bawaal’, starring Varun Dhawan and Janhvi Kapoor, was released, fans have been intrigued by the concept of a love story set during the World War II era.

It seems that Indian fans are not the only ones to like the concept, as the film has reportedly garnered significant interest from Japan. Sajid Nadiadwala, the producer of the film, has reportedly received a large number of requests from the country to dub the Nitesh Tiwari-directed film in Japanese for its release.

According to a source quoted by entertainment outlet Pinkvilla, “The requests [for the Japanese dub] have come in from the Japanese audience. They have expressed their interest to dub it in the local language as due to the World War 2 connection, the film has the potential to resonate with the audience in Japan. There are conversations in Japan taking Bawaal as the subject matter of the film touches upon the themes and events surrounding World War 2, which also forms a part of Japan’s history.”

This report was confirmed by a spokesperson of the Nadiadwala Grandson Entertainment – the production house behind ‘Bawaal’ – who also said that the team has requested to release the film in Japan.

‘World war within’: Bawaal trailer garners Japanese attention

The large interest from Japan is mainly due to Bawaal’s subject matter, which involves a period love story set during the World War II era. In the trailer, Dhawan plays a small-town boy who falls in love and marries Kapoor’s character. They go on a tour of several European landmarks, including Paris, while World War II is around the corner.

The characters even refer to the war, speaking of a ‘world war within’ in the trailer.

Earlier, director Nitesh Tiwari spoke about the film’s World War connection, saying, “World War II is humongous. There’s so much that had happened and you can’t take everything. You’ve to pick and choose things which would probably impact the journey of the characters and that’s precisely why it [World War II as a backdrop] has been taken. Hitler also happens to be a part of it and you can’t not have him in World War II.”

Bawaal is set to be released on the OTT platform Amazon Prime Video on July 21.
