Warner Bros.’ international blockbuster film ‘Barbie’ has crossed the $1 billion mark in global box-office sales during its third week of release, becoming only the second film this year to breach that mark.

In an announcement made on Sunday, Warner Bros. said that the movie raked in $53 million in the United States and Canada during its third week, along with an additional $74 million from international markets. This raises the movie’s total earnings to $459.4 million domestically and an astounding $1.03 billion worldwide.

‘Barbie’ now claims the position of being the second-highest-grossing film of the year, trailing closely behind Universal Pictures’ ‘The Super Mario Bros. Movie’, which earned $1.35 billion in ticket sales since its April release.

This week also witnessed the debut of two new films in the US. Warner Bros.’ ‘Meg 2: The Trench’ secured the second spot in earnings with $30 million in ticket sales, as per estimates by the media analytics company Comscore Inc.

Universal Picture’s ‘Oppenheimer’ is third on the list, and Paramount Pictures’ new release ‘Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem’ followed closely in fourth after generating $28 million in revenue.

Greta Gerwig sets record for solo director earnings with Barbie ticket sales

The massive worldwide success of the film has seen Gerwig becoming the first woman with sole director credit to achieve the $1 billion milestone, as per a statement by Warner Bros.
