Bollywood legend Amitabh Bachchan has purchased land in a new upscale residential community under construction in the historic Indian city of Ayodhya, according to reports.

The seven-star Sarayu complex is being developed by Mumbai firm The House of Abhinandan Lodha (HoABL). While plot details are undisclosed, industry sources estimate Bachchan's purchase at around 10,000 sq ft for £1.8 million.

Ayodhya holds deep religious significance as the birthplace of the Hindu deity Rama. The city is preparing to inaugurate a long-awaited Ram temple on 22 January, with Bachchan confirmed as Sarayu's first resident.

"I am looking forward to embarking on this journey with The House of Abhinandan Lodha for The Sarayu in Ayodhya, a city that holds a special place in my heart," Bachchan said at a launch event.

"The timeless spirituality and cultural richness of Ayodhya have forged an emotional connection that transcends geographical boundaries," he continued. "This is the start of a heartfelt journey into the soul of Ayodhya, where tradition and modernity seamlessly co-exist, creating an emotional tapestry that resonates with me deeply."

The 51-acre Sarayu development, located 15 minutes from the temple, will feature a five-star palace hotel on completion in 2028.

Abhinandan Lodha hailed Bachchan as Sarayu's "first citizen." He said the icon's involvement reflects confidence in both Ayodhya's economic future and its enduring spiritual status.

The announcement comes as religious tourism rises across India. Bachchan's birthplace of Prayagraj is a four-hour drive from Ayodhya. His high-profile backing indicates growing commercial interest in the holy city.
