Tamil superstar Nayanthara has issued an apology amidst controversy surrounding her recent film "Annapoorani" on Netflix. In an Instagram post, the actor expressed regret if the movie inadvertently caused hurt to religious sentiments.

The post featured "Jai Shri Ram" and the Hindu "Om" symbol, as Nayanthara explained she did not expect the removal of the already censored film from Netflix. As someone who frequently visits temples across India, she stressed it was never her or her team's intention to offend anyone's beliefs. "To those whose feelings we've touched, I extend my sincere and heartfelt apologies," she wrote.

The controversy erupted after some Hindu groups accused "Annapoorani" of spreading anti-Hindu propaganda. Last week, Netflix took down the film following objections.

Nayanthara further explained the film's goal was to uplift and inspire, not cause distress. Over her two-decade career, she has aimed to spread positivity and mutual understanding.

At the heart of the controversy is a scene where Nayanthara's character, a Brahmin woman named Annapoorani aiming to become a chef, is convinced by a classmate to try eating meat. He claims Lord Rama consumed meat too, and doing so is not a sin.

The depiction angered many Hindus, including activist Ramesh Solanki who filed a police complaint. This led to an FIR against Nayanthara, her co-star Jai, the film's crew and Netflix executives in India.

While Nayanthara has apologized, the case illuminates religious sensitivities around modern retellings of faith stories. Filmmakers face a tricky balancing act of creative license and respecting beliefs. Open dialogue, empathy and level-headedness are vital to resolve such issues in a diverse society.
