Dr. Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar, more commonly referred to as the “father” of the Indian Constitution, was a multifaceted individual whose contributions had an impact beyond the constituting assembly. He advocated for reform, played essential roles in politics, economics, and law, and was a prolific writer who wrote a lot about history, economics, political science, and sociology.

Ambedkar was a social reformer who worked tirelessly to improve the lives of India’s underprivileged classes. Additionally, he fervently supported gender equality and women’s rights.

Life struggles of Ambedkar

Born on April 14, 1891, in Mhow, Madhya Pradesh, Ambedkar was raised in a Mahar family, one of the lowest or “untouchable” castes in the country at the time. As a result, he was subjected to discrimination from an early age.

He is the only person of his caste accepted into Bombay’s prestigious Elphinstone High School. He was subjected to oppression by upper-caste teachers and staff while attending school. He and his Dalit friends were prohibited from sitting with other students in the classroom. They were not permitted to consume the school’s earthen pot of water; instead, the peon, an upper caste member, poured water from a height for them to drink. In addition, there were days when they were without the peon and had to go without drinking water.

However, he overcome those obstacles and attended Columbia University to finish his postgraduate studies there. After that, he worked on his doctoral thesis at the London School of Economics, earning two degrees.

Knowing Ambedkar beyond Constitution

Ambedkar was Free India’s principal regulation and equity clergyman and led the drafting council of the constituent gathering. However, in addition to creating the Constitution, he also worked to combat social discrimination and inspired Buddhist and Dalit movements in the country.

Supporter of worker rights: Ambedkar believed that workers ought to be able to join unions and negotiate collectively with their employers. Additionally, he thought that since labor is an essential component of the economy, it should be treated with dignity and respect. He upheld most minor wage regulations, which he figured would keep workers from being exploited.

Supported ladies’ privileges: He also strongly supported women’s rights and gender equality. He thought women should be treated with the same respect and dignity as men and have the same opportunities and rights as men.

He was also a proponent of contraception and family planning, which he believed was essential for limiting population growth and enhancing women’s health and well-being.

Job in RBI’s foundation: Although he was not directly associated with the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), he was instrumental in its creation. He was instrumental in drafting the Financial Organizations Act of 1949, which gave RBI more capacity to manage businesses and public banks.
