Hollywood actor Natalie Portman and her choreographer husband Benjamin Millepied have separated after being married for 11 years, media reports said.
The news of their separation came to light following rumours of Millepied’s alleged affair with climate change activist Camille Etienne. Speculation about the split began on their 11th wedding anniversary on August 4, when Portman was spotted without her wedding ring at an event in Sydney, Australia.
“After news of his affair came out, they’ve been trying to work on their marriage but are currently on the outs,” an inside source told the media outlet Us Weekly.
The rumours about Benjamin’s alleged affair with Etienne surfaced in June, the report said.
During that time, a source told Us Weekly that Portman believed ‘Benjamin’s affair was a brief and stupid liaison that means nothing to him’, and she was ‘willing to see if she’s capable of rebuilding her trust’ in him for the sake of their children so that they do not have to ‘grow up in a broken home’.
Another source mentioned that the couple was ‘talking and working on it together for the sake of their children’, and Millepied expressed deep regret over his actions.
“It [the affair] was short-lived and it is over… He knows he made an enormous mistake and he is doing all he can to get Natalie to forgive him and keep their family together. Natalie is incredibly private and has no intention of playing this out in the media. Her biggest priority is protecting her children and their privacy,” a source told entertainment outlet People in June.
The relationship between Portman and Millepied began in 2009 when they worked together on the Oscar-winning thriller ‘Black Swan’, directed by Darren Aronofsky. Millepied worked as a choreographer in the film. Since then, the pair have collaborated on various projects, including the 2018 film ‘Vox Lux’, where Millepied’s choreography contributed to Portman’s portrayal of a troubled pop star Celeste.
In 2010, Millepied proposed to Portman, and they tied the knot in 2012. The couple shares two children, a 12-year-old son Aleph and a 6-year-old daughter Amalia.
As Portman navigates through this challenging phase in her personal life, her fans can look forward to her upcoming project, ‘May December’. In the film, she plays an actor researching a scandal from two decades ago. Directed by Todd Haynes, the movie will be released on Netflix later this year and also stars Julianne Moore and Charles Melton.
