Mamata Banerjee, the chief minister of West Bengal, and her Delhi counterpart Arvind Kejriwal proposed Mallikarjun Kharge, the leader of the Congress party, for the position during a December meeting in India. But Kharge had responded that the alliance needed to secure a sufficient number of seats before claiming the position.Several speculations have sparked soon after the Congress manifesto displayed the images of the two prominent leaders, Rahul Gandhi and party president Mallikarjun Kharge.
