As the curtains draw on the intense drama of India's 2024 Lok Sabha elections, the nation waits with bated breath to uncover the verdict. Will the BJP-led NDA secure a historic third term in power, or will the united opposition front known as INDIA pose a formidable challenge to Prime Minister Modi's dominance? With anticipation reaching its peak, the Election Commission is poised to unveil the election results today, revealing the outcome of months of meticulous preparation and rigorous on-the-ground campaigning.

Counting will start from 8 AM

The counting will start from 8 AM today. Postal ballots take the spotlight initially, followed swiftly by the tallying of votes recorded in electronic voting machines (EVMs), as delineated by the Election Commission. The meticulous sequence proceeds with the verification of Voter Verified Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT) slips against EVM results, ensuring the integrity of the electoral process.

Election in seven phases

This electoral saga unfolded across seven phases, spanning from April 19 to June 1, enveloping the nation in its democratic fervor. While twenty states, including Delhi, exercised their franchise in a single phase, others like Maharashtra and Jammu and Kashmir underwent polling across five phases. The electoral battleground of Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and West Bengal witnessed the full spectrum of seven-phase voting, underscoring the magnitude of democratic participation. Karnataka, Rajasthan, Tripura, and Manipur partook in dual-phase polling, while Chhattisgarh, Assam, Odisha, Madhya Pradesh, and Jharkhand experienced the electoral saga over multiple phases, reflecting the diverse electoral dynamics across the nation.

Who will win today?

Amidst the electoral cacophony, leaders of the INDIA bloc exuded confidence, projecting a majority victory. Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, buoyant after the culmination of the final phase on June 1, boldly declared, "The INDIA bloc will clinch a minimum of 295 seats." Contrary voices, however, emerged from the corridors of exit polls, forecasting a potential triumph for the BJP-led NDA. The India Today-Axis My India exit poll, alongside other surveys, hinted at a continuation of the NDA's reign, with projections even flirting with the BJP's ambitious '400 paar' rhetoric.

Exit polls show dominance of NDA

A composite analysis of five exit polls, including the India Today-Axis My India survey, paints a picture of dominance for the BJP-led NDA, potentially bagging a staggering 379 seats. In contrast, the INDIA bloc, spearheaded by the Congress, is anticipated to secure 136 seats, according to these projections, encapsulating the anticipation and speculation surrounding the election outcome.

Voting conducted on 543 seats

Voting was conducted in seven phases for a total of 543 Lok Sabha seats in the country. The fate of a total of 8360 candidates is sealed in EVMs. After the final phase of voting, most of the 'exit poll' forecasts have shown the NDA alliance close to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's ambitious target of crossing 400 seats, while the 'India' alliance has been projected to reach the figure of 180 seats. However, along with the Lok Sabha election results, the results of the assembly elections of Andhra Pradesh and Odisha will also be announced. Counting of votes is to be done only on 542 seats of Lok Sabha because BJP candidate has already been declared victorious unopposed on Surat seat of Gujarat.
