Piyush Goyal, a stalwart in Indian politics, currently holds multifaceted roles, including that of the leader of the House in the Rajya Sabha and Union Minister of Commerce and Industry, Consumer Affairs, Food, and Public Distribution. His nomination as the BJP candidate from Mumbai North for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections underscores his influential presence within the political sphere.

With a commendable track record, Goyal has served as a Rajya Sabha member thrice, demonstrating his unwavering commitment to public service and governance. His tenure has been marked by strategic leadership and transformative initiatives aimed at advancing the nation's growth trajectory.

Stint in Key Portfolios

During his illustrious career, Goyal has assumed pivotal responsibilities, including the charge of renewable energy and mining portfolios. Notably, he stepped into the role of finance minister during the BJP-led government's first term, showcasing versatility and adeptness in navigating complex economic landscapes.

Born on June 13, 1964, in Mumbai, Piyush Goyal's journey is deeply intertwined with his ideological inspiration drawn from Atal Bihari Vajpayee. Hailing from a family with strong affiliations to the BJP and the RSS, Goyal imbibed the principles of Hindutva from his late parents, Ved Prakash Goyal and Chandrakanta Goyal, who themselves were prominent figures in Indian politics.

Educational pursuits

Goyal's academic journey reflects his pursuit of excellence. He earned his Bachelor's degree in Commerce from Sydenham College, Mumbai, and pursued Chartered Accountancy, distinguishing himself as a diligent scholar. Additionally, he enriched his knowledge base by attending law school at Mumbai University, laying a strong foundation for his future endeavors. He started his political journey with BJP in 2010. 

He has secured the second position nationwide as a chartered accountant, graduating from Mumbai University. In his political career, Goyal played a pivotal role in negotiating significant agreements like the Free Trade Agreement with the UAE and the Economic Cooperation Trade Agreement with Australia. 

Political career of Piyush Goyal

During his tenure, he spearheaded various initiatives such as the Ujwal Discom Assurance Yojana (UDAY) and the electrification campaign under the Pradhan Mantri Sahaj Bijli Har Ghar Yojana (Saubhagya). Notably, as Finance Minister, he launched the PM-KISAN scheme, offering financial assistance to farmers, which greatly influenced the 2019 elections.

Goyal's leadership also saw the implementation of the PLI scheme to promote indigenous manufacturing under "Make in India" and the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana (PMGKAY), ensuring food security for approximately 80 crore people over two years. Furthermore, he initiated the UJALA program, distributing LED bulbs nationwide, contributing significantly to energy conservation.

In recognition of his groundbreaking efforts in revolutionizing India's energy sector through energy efficiency advocacy, Goyal was honored with the prestigious 4th Annual Carnot Prize in 2018.

Goyal has been nominated by the BJP as a candidate for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, contesting from the Mumbai North constituency. The election for the Mumbai North seat is scheduled for May 20, marking a crucial phase in the 2024 Lok Sabha Election.
