The Candidate: Samrat Choudhary is not a new name in the politics of India. The 56-year-old belongs to the Kushwaha caste and holds the post of deputy chief minister of Bihar along with Nitish Kumar, the chief minister of Bihar. Samrat Choudhary entered active politics in 1990 but was in headlines for serving jail for 88 days due to “torture” by Lalu Prasad and “for making” Nitish Kumar the Chief Minister, in 1995.
Choudhary, during the beginning of his political career served as minister in the government headed by Rabri Devi but was ousted from power in 2005. He was with Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) till 2014 and after that he joined JD (U), before joining BJP in 2018.
During his political career, Choudhary has held several positions, including, Agriculture Minister in Bihar Government in 1999 and the Minister of Urban Development and Housing Department in 2014. the command of Bihar was handed over to Choudhary by the national president of JP Nadda.
Choudhary is serving as the leader of the opposition in Bihar Legislative Council. He took oath on January 28 2024 and along with that held the post of state president of Bhartiya Janata Party.
After becoming the president of Bihar BJP, while speaking to the media, Choudhary asserted that his priority is to expand the party and will work to protect the honor and dignity of workers.
The 56-year-old Samrat Chaudhary has a very rich political legacy. Samrat Choudhary has got the political legacy from his father Shakuni Chaudhary, who is among one of the founders of Samata Party. Shakuni Chaudhary is one of the big leaders of the Kushwaha community and had served as an MLA and MP.
Samrat Choudhary, in 1999, was chosen as the Agriculture Minister in the Rabri Devi government and has been into controversies due to his young age. In the year 2000 and 2010, he was elected MLA from Parbatta assembly constituency and became the Minister of Urban Development Department in the year 2014. In the year 2018, he left RJD and joined BJP and was Panchayati Raj Minister in the NDA government.
