SP's Dharmendra Yadav sweeps Azamgarh on battle ballot; Defeats BJP's Nirahua

The Election Commission of India provided figures indicating that the Azamgarh constituency had an estimated 56.16% voter turnout in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

As the ballots are tallied in the Azamgarh constituency, excitement was growing, and the results are out now. With a massive 508239 votes, SP's Dharmendra Yadav has won the elections. BJP candidate Dinesh Nirahua is in second place, trailing by 161035 votes. We are now awaiting additional information regarding the vote total. The final Lok Sabha election result for Uttar Pradesh's Azamgarh constituency is still pending. 

Thirteen candidates ran in the by-polls held in Azamgarh for the 17th Lok Sabha. Nine candidates were running for the Azamgarh Lok Sabha seat in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. Fifteen candidates were vying for this seat in 2019, compared to eighteen in 2014 and sixteen in the 2009 polls.

SP wipes out battleground

Mahendra Nath Yadav of the Moolniwasi Samaj Party (MSP), Mashhod Sabeeha Ansari of the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), Dharmendra Yadav of the Samajwadi Party (SP), Vijay Kumar of the Independent (IND), Ravindra Nath Sharma of the Moulik Adhikar Party (MAP), Shashidhar of the Independent (IND), Pankaj Kumar Yadav of the Independent (IND), Dinesh Lal Yadav (Nirahua), Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), and Paras Yadav of the Jan Raajya Party (JRP) are the candidates running for this seat in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

There were 18,20,854 registered voters in the Azamgarh Lok Sabha seat for the 2024 Lok Sabha election, with 9,88,858 males, 8,79,264 females, and 43 members of the third gender represented on the registers. There were 17,89,168 registered voters for the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, including 9,88,858 men, 8,15,708 women, and 69 people of the third gender. There were 17,03,121 registered voters in this constituency for the 2014 elections, with 9,41,447 men, 7,61,573 women, and 101 members of the third gender. There were 15,78,854 electors in total in the 2009 polls, with 8,53,748 men and 7,25,106 women.

The Election Commission of India provided figures indicating that the Azamgarh constituency had an estimated 56.16% voter turnout in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. The turnout for this seat was 58% in 2019, 56% in 2014, and 45% in 2009. In comparison to the turnout in 2019, the projected turnout in 2024 was -1.36%.

Previous victories in Azamgarh 

Dinesh Lal Yadav "Nirahua" of the BJP defeated Dharmendra Yadav of the SP in June 23, 2022, bypolls for the Azamgarh Lok Sabha seat. The margin of victory was 8,679 votes or 0.95% of the total number of votes cast for the seat. In the bye-elections, the BJP received 34.38% of the votes. Akhilesh Yadav of the SP defeated Dinesh Lal Yadav Nirahua of the BJP in this seat at the 2019 Lok Sabha general elections by a margin of 2,59,874 votes, or 25.25% of the total votes cast for the seat. In 2019, SP's vote share in this seat was 60.36%. In this seat, SP candidate Mulayam Singh Yadav defeated BJP candidate Ramakant Yadav in 2014 by a margin of 63,204 votes, or 6.58% of the total votes cast in the constituency. In the seat, SP received 35.44% of the vote.

18,20,854 registered voters in the Azamgarh Lok Sabha seat were listed on the electoral lists for the 2024 Lok Sabha election. There were 17,89,168 registered voters for the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. This constituency had 17,03,121 registered voters in total for the 2014 elections. The total number of electors in the 2009 polls was 15,78,854.
