Shankar Lalwani of BJP secures historic victory in Indore with nearly 12 lakh votes; NOTA hits new high

Shankar Lalwani, the incumbent BJP MP from Indore, won on Tuesday by an unprecedented margin of 11,75,092 votes in a battle where 2.18 lakh voters chose the "none of the above" option, setting a record for NOTA. According to a BJP leader, his victory margin is most likely the largest in the nation's electoral history. Union minister Virendra Kumar defeated Pankaj Ahirwar of the Congress by a margin of 4,03,312 votes to win the Tikamgarh (SC) seat.

On April 29, the deadline for nomination withdrawals, Congress candidate Akshay Kanti Bam withdrew his candidacy, dealing a blow to the party's chances of winning the Indore Lok Sabha seat. Later, Bam joined the BJP, which prompted the Congress to urge voters to use the NOTA option on electronic voting machines on May 13 during elections in Indore.    

Previous victory record

In the 2019 elections, Lalwani achieved victory for the first time. Since 2009, Virendra Kumar has won four consecutive elections to hold the Tikamgarh Lok Sabha seat without losing. He formerly served four terms as the representative for Sagar in the Lok Sabha, but he moved to Tikamgarh following delimitation in 2008.
