In a recent press conference, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal stirred controversy by stating that Prime Minister Narendra Modi might retire upon turning 75 next year. Kejriwal alleged that Modi himself established a rule in 2014, mandating retirement for those aged 75, which led to the exit of senior BJP leaders like LK Advani and Murli Manohar Joshi. He further implied that Modi seeks to pave the way for Home Minister Amit Shah to assume the role of Prime Minister. He also stated, "PM Modi is asking for votes for Amit Shah. Will Amit Shah fulfill Modi's guarantee?"

Amit Shah’s rebuttal

Responding to Kejriwal’s assertions, Home Minister Amit Shah refuted the claim, asserting that there exists no such provision in the BJP’s constitution mandating retirement at 75. Shah emphasized that Modi is going to continue leading the nation beyond his 75th birthday.

Interim bail for Kejriwal

The Home Minister also criticized Kejriwal's confidence, highlighting that the interim bail is only a temporary measure and does not absolve the Delhi Chief Minister from the liquor policy case, in which former Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia is also implicated.

Shah emphasized that Kejriwal's interim bail was granted solely for the purpose of election campaigning, and it expires on June 1, after which Kejriwal must surrender to the authorities. Shah further remarked that if Kejriwal perceives this interim bail as exoneration, it reflects a misunderstanding of the legal proceedings.

The Supreme Court's decision to grant interim bail to Kejriwal was based on the urgency of the ongoing Lok Sabha elections and the pending verdict on his petition challenging his arrest by the Enforcement Directorate (ED). However, this interim relief does not negate his legal responsibilities, as emphasized by Shah.

Do's and dont's for Kejriwal

Under the terms of the interim bail, Kejriwal is prohibited from accessing his office, executing official paperwork, or attending the Delhi secretariat. He must seek authorization from the Lieutenant Governor for any pressing matters requiring his signature. With the Lok Sabha elections underway, the trajectory of these developments remains uncertain, but they undoubtedly add fuel to the already charged political environment.
