The repolling begins at Bengal's Barasat, Mathurapur for Lok Sabha Elections 2024. This comes on the eve of vote counting, the Election Commission has directed repolling at a single polling station in each of the Barasat and Mathurapur Lok Sabha constituencies in West Bengal. The election started from 7 am to will end at 6 pm.

Why repolling?

The decision follows reports from returning officers, district election officers, and relevant observers, considering all pertinent factors. Repolling will occur at 61 Kadambagachi Saradar Pada FP School, Room No 2 of 120-Deganga Assembly Constituency in the 17 Barasat Parliamentary Constituency, and at 26 Aaddir Mahal Srichaitanya Bidyapith FP School of 131-Kakdwip Assembly Constituency in the 20-Mathurapur (SC) Parliamentary Constituency in West Bengal. Saturday's seventh and final phase of polling saw a voter turnout of 73.79 percent across nine Lok Sabha seats in West Bengal. Results are slated for declaration on June 4. However, exit polls suggest a potential victory for the BJP, projected to clinch 22-26 seats, edging out the ruling TMC's predicted 14-18 seats.

Bengal polls marred by violence

All these seats went to the polls in the final phase of June 1. Clashes broke out between supporters of Trinamool Congress (TMC), Indian Secular Front (ISF), Indian Secular Front (ISF) and Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) in various areas of the state in the seventh and final phase of Lok Sabha Elections on June 1. The Election Commission's directive responds to the Bengal BJP's demands for a repoll in roughly 420 booths in the Diamond Harbour constituency and 11 booths in the Mathurapur constituency.

BJP alleges of malpractice

Alleging widespread malpractices, the party specifically sought repolling at all 256 booths in Falta. On June 1, BJP leader and LoP Suvendu Adhikari leveled accusations of malpractice at multiple Diamond Harbour booths, citing instances of violence during West Bengal's elections. Adhikari emphasized the BJP's call for repolls at hundreds of polling stations within the Diamond Harbour seat.

Furthermore, the BJP leader accused state police of partisan behavior, alleging non-cooperation with Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) and misleading them throughout the day.
