The results of the Lok Sabha 2024 elections are in, and the opposition Congress party received 99 seats, while the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) secured 240 seats, much fewer than anticipated.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has won a third term, but the BJP will need the backing of other parties in his coalition, including Chandrababu Naidu of the TDP and Nitish Kumar of the JD (U). This is because the BJP is 32 seats short of the 272 majority threshold, which is a devastating blow for the PM, who had hoped for a landslide victory known as "400 paar."

The Bharatiya Janata Party did not win a majority on its own for the first time since it stormed to power in 2014, considerably less than the record 303 seats it won in the 2019 election.

The Opposition INDIA alliance hailed a type of success in light of the unexpected decline in BJP support, while the Congress declared that PM Modi had suffered a "moral and political loss" in the election.

The Samajwadi Party, which gained 37 seats, and the INDIA bloc posed a serious threat to the BJP in Uttar Pradesh. The Samajwadi Party reduced the BJP's count to 35 from 62 seats in 2019.

The Election Commission of India reports that the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) has 16 seats, the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) has 22 seats, and the All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) has 29 seats.

With seven seats won, the Nationalist Congress Party (led by Sharadchandra Pawar) is ahead by one seat.
Other noteworthy outcomes are the 12 seats won by Janata Dal (United) - JD(U), the 9 seats won by Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray), the 7 seats won by Shiv Sena (SHS), and the 5 seats won by Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas). Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), Yuvajana Sramika Rythu Congress Party (YSRCP), and Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI(M)) all won four seats.

Additionally, the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML), Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), and Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) each won 3 seats.

Several other parties, United People's Party Liberal, Asom Gana Parishad, Hindustani Awam Morcha (Secular), Kerala Congress, Revolutionary Socialist Party, Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), Voice of the People Party, Zoram People's Movement, Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD), Rashtriya Loktantrik Party, Bharat Adivasi Party, Sikkim Krantikari Morcha (SKM), Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK), Aazad Samaj Party (Kanshi Ram), Apna Dal (Soneylal), AJSU Party and All India Majlis-E-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) secured 1 seat each.

With 240 seats, the BJP's total is less than in previous elections, while the Congress's climbed from 52 seats in 2019 to 99 seats in 2024.

To discuss the way future, a meeting of the INDIA bloc and the NDA with its two largest partners, the TDP and JD(U), has been arranged for today.
