In response to a complaint filed by the Congress party on Monday, the Election Commission of India (ECI) has directed the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) to verify if there is any mismatch in affidavit details submitted by Union Minister Rajeev Chandrashekhar, the BJP contesting candidate from Thiruvananthapuram Lok Sabha seat.

According to the sources, the Congress party has alleged that the BJP minister is a multi-millionaire, he has assets worth Rs 8,000 in their complaint to the poll body.

Following the procedure, the election commission today directed CBDT to check the affidavit and verify the mismatch if any.
As per the rule, any mismatch and falsification of the affidavit will be dealt with under Section 125 A of the RP Act 1951.
Concealing information under this law can be punishable with imprisonment for a term which may extend to six months, or with a fine, or with both.

According to the sources, while submitting the affidavit for Lok Sabha elections on April 5, Chandrasekhar declared assets worth over Rs 28 crore which includes cash deposits in banks and financial sectors and other valuable items such as jewelry. In addition to this, his immovable assets include a self-acquired property with a current market value of Rs 14 crore, purchased for Rs 5,26,42,640.

It is to be noted that this has come after Rajeev Chandrasekhar filed his nomination for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections on Thursday and expressed confidence that the people of Thiruvananthapuram would support him.

Chandrasekhar will contest against three-time Congress MP Shashi Tharoor in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.
