A case has been lodged against Tejasvi Surya, BJP's candidate for Bengaluru South and incumbent MP, over allegations of seeking votes on religious grounds. The Karnataka Chief Electoral Officer, through a statement on the microblogging platform X, confirmed that Mr. Surya had shared a video on social media "soliciting votes on the ground of religion."
The filing of the case took place at the Jayanagar police station in Bengaluru, marking a significant development in the ongoing electoral landscape.
In a post-voting interaction with the media, Mr. Surya commented on the electoral scenario, particularly targeting the Congress party's anticipated performance. He asserted that the Congress might not secure more than 30 seats in the ongoing Lok Sabha polls, citing various surveys that indicated this trend.
"The Congress party has reached a state of absolute frustration. Survey after survey indicates its potential of not winning more than 30 seats... The continuous barrage of personal attacks and unfounded accusations against the PM (Narendra Modi) has historically resulted in the Prime Minister's increasing strength and the BJP's growing popularity," Mr. Surya remarked in an interview with news agency.
In the Bengaluru South constituency, the Congress has fielded Sowmya Reddy as its candidate, setting the stage for a competitive electoral battle.
The Lok Sabha elections in Karnataka unfolded with 14 seats in the spotlight during the second phase of polling. This phase encompassed a total of 88 Lok Sabha constituencies spread across 13 states and Union Territories. As per data from the Election Commission, an impressive turnout of over 15.88 crore voters participated in the electoral process during this phase.
