Just days ahead of Lok Sabha Elections 2024, the Election Commission of India on Tuesday issued a notice to Congress leader Randeep Surjewala for his derogatory remarks against Bharatiya Janata Party candidate Hema Malini. EC has sought a response from the Congress leader latest by April 11 at 5 PM.

Additionally, the ECI asked Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge to take steps to ensure that party officials and leaders speak respectfully about women in public.

The poll body reaffirmed that it is not acceptable for election campaigns to serve as a forum for any type of discrimination against women.

The Congress President shall respond by April 11 detailing the measures the party has taken to guarantee that all party officials strictly adhere to the Commission's recommendations protecting women's honor and dignity in public discourse.

Meanwhile, reacting to Surjewala's remarks, Hema Malini while speaking to ANI said that people should learn how to respect women from Prime Minister Narendra Modi. She also said that Congress leaders attack popular people because targeting the unpopular ones won’t benefit them.

Surjewala’s clarification on the matter

Responding to the objectionable remarks, Surjewala said that the video posted by the BJP leader has been edited, distorted and shared to distract people from Modi’s conspiracy to destroy the Constitution of India.
