Taking a dig at Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s remark that he has been sent by the God (Parmatma) for a purpose, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said that god should be placed in temples.

Mamata was speaking at a rally when she took a jibe at PM Modi and said, "One says he (PM Modi) is the God of the gods... one leader says Lord Jagannath is his devotee...We will build a temple for him and worship him there, offer prasad, flowers, and if he wishes, we will also offer him dhokla."

The remarks from Banerjee have come in the wake of PM Modi’s latest interview with a news channel where he asserted that he was not biological but sent by God for a special purpose.

Sambit Patra, the BJP's candidate for the Puri Lok Sabha seat, recently said that Lord Jagannath was a 'Modi Bhakt'. Patra expressed regret for his words, claiming it was a slip of the tongue.

While speaking further, Banerjee said, "I have worked with so many Prime Ministers, like Atal Bihari Vajpayee, who used to love me a lot. I collaborated with Deve Gowda, Rajiv Gandhi, Manmohan Singh, and Narshimha Rao. There is no need for a prime minister like him, as I have never seen one."
