US airlines suffer business: Massive winter storm results in over 2000 flights canceled

On Friday over 2000 fights had to be canceled as a hazardous storm covered the sky. Read below to find other disruptions that were caused due to the extreme weather.

Widespread power outrages which distributed businesses in 12 states were caused by the storm. At 5.30 p.m. ET 5,846 flights were delayed and  2058 flights were canceled. 

Some airlines that were affected

Southwest Airlines (LUV.N) had to cancel 401 of their flights. 358 flights were canceled by SkyWest (SKYW.O. While Delta Air Lines (DAL.N) expressed "We expect some operational challenges due to the weather in the Midwest today and potentially tomorrow due to the winter weather in the region".   Southwest Airlines informed in a travel advisory that some of their flights scheduled to Detroit, Omaha, and Chicago could be disrupted. United has canceled 284 flights so far, with some extending to Saturday as they will wait for regulatory approvable to resume operating Boeing's (BA.N) 737 MAX 9 jets.

The Federal Aviation Administration's (FAA) warning

On Thursday the FAA warned that clouds, snow, and strong winds may cause a delay in flights at some airports. The FAA had launched a formal investigation on 737 MAX 9 this past Thursday. This was done after a cabin panel blew off an Alaska Airlines (ALK.N) flight in mid-air resulting in an emergency landing.
