Reserve Bank Governor, Shaktikanta Das on Thursday during the Monetary Policy Committee meeting announced that almost ₹1.80 lakh crore have been deposited in the banks so far. The announcement for the withdrawal of the highest denomination was made last month. For which, September 30, was announced as the last date for deposit.

According to the information, “As on March 31, 2023, ₹2,000 notes worth ₹3.62 lakh crore were in circulation.” The announcement for the withdrawal of the currency notes was made on May 19 and the exchange and deposit window will be open till September 30.

The governor also made this clear that the government has no plans to withdraw ₹500, or re-introducing ₹1,000 notes, and requested the people not to speculate anything.

Meanwhile, the key interest rate remains unchanged in a row by Reserve Bank of India but also signalled that it wants to see inflation moderate more while preserving the growth momentum.
