Akbar Al Baker, the Chief Executive Officer of Qatar Airways is set to step down from the post after 27 years of remarkable service to the airlines. The announcement about his resignation was made by Qatar Airways announced on Monday, October 23.

The Qatari government which manages the affairs of the airline, has decided to appoint Badr Mohammed Al-Meer as his successor. Al Baker will be in office till November 5, 2023, following which Al-Meer will take over the position as the CEO, a statement noted.

“Qatar Airways Group confirms after 27 years of remarkable service, Qatar Airways Group Chief Executive - His Excellency Mr. Akbar Al Baker, will be stepping down from his current position as Group Chief Executive effective 5 November 2023 and will be succeeded by Engr. Badr Mohammed Al-Meer as Group Chief Executive for Qatar Airways”, the airline said in a statement.

Akbar Al Baker took over as the CEO of Qatar Airlines in 1996 when the airline only had a fleet of five aircraft, Baker said in a letter to his employees as per media reports. Now the airline has a fleet of 248 modern and fuel-efficient aircraft and is serving over 160 destinations across the world, Baker added.

In more than 2 decades the airlines have taken over the airlines have emerged as a long-distance powerhouse challenging Gulf rival Emirates.
