Narendra Modi is on a two-day state visit to Egypt, and he met with Egyptian Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly and other top-level cabinet ministers on Saturday. The topics discussed in the meeting included deepening trade ties and strategic partnership between the two countries.

The Indian Prime Minister has been invited to Egypt by Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, the President of Egypt, who was the guest of honour at India’s Republic Day celebrations in 2023.

Modi’s Egypt tour a sign of economic partnership?

Modi’s visit to Egypt – the first by an Indian Prime Minister in 26 years – is expected to increase Indian investment in the North African countries. Egypt’s economy has suffered tremendously since the onset of the Russia-Ukraine conflict, which impacted its grain and wheat imports. In 2022, India sent over 61,500 tonnes of wheat to Egypt to ease the country’s food crisis.

An increase in Indian investment in Egypt will certainly help the ailing economy and currency of the country, which has depreciated by half since 2022. India will look to increase its investment in Egypt, which – at about seven billion dollars – is half of China’s investment in Egypt.

Cairo, in turn, will look to India to get a clear pathway to joining the influential BRICS organization, which presently has Brazil, Russia, China, South Africa, and India.
