The Ministry of Defence and Bharat Electronic Limited has signed 10 contracts worth Rs 5,498 crore. BEL is a state-owned aerospace and Defence electronics company for the Indian armed forces. The PSU shared the information on Thursday during the regulatory filing to the stock exchanges. The contract is been signed to supply the 90 units of Electronic Welfare Suite Equipment for Medium Lift Helicopter.
Similarly, another contract has been signed with the Akash Missile system for the maintenance of two squadrons. It is a medium-range surface-to-air missile (SAM) system that was created by DRDO and is currently being produced by Bharat Electronics Limited. The Akash Missile system has the ability to neutralise aerial threats such as fighter jets, cruise missiles, and air-to-surface missiles from a distance of up to 30 km.
In another deal for Project Akashteer, the contract between Automated Air Defence and Reporting System and instant Fire Detection and Suppressing system IFDSS for T72 was signed. Additionally, for Indian Navy, contracts for Software Defined Radio (1,265 units), HD VLLF HF Receiver (1,178 units) and Sarang (12 units) were signed.
Defense Electronics Research Laboratory in Hyderabad created the Sarang, an advanced Electronic Support Measure device for Indian Navy helicopters, as part of the Samudrika programme. Notably, Sarangs, which intercept, identify, and intensify radar emitters made up of cutting-edge technology, will be installed in Kamov 31 helicopters of the Indian Navy.
Three major projects are INS-SA, CMS for P17 and P28, and Varuna EW, have reportedly been signed with the Indian Navy, according to the information. The innovative designs and manufacturing prowess of the Indian Defence industry, which is led by BEL and involves participation from other public sectors, private sectors, and MSMEs, are all showcased by these projects. These initiatives will help the Indian government’s “Make in India” and “Atmanirbhar Bharat Abhiyaan” programmes achieve another milestone.
To boost the initiative taken by the Indian government under ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’, the Ministry of Defence has inked a Rs 1,700 crore contract with BrahMos Aerospace Private Limited (BAPL) for procurement of next-generation maritime mobile coastal batteries and BrahMos missiles. According to the Defence Ministry, the delivery of these batteries is scheduled to commence in 2027. The pact is signed with BAPL for procurement of next-generation maritime mobile coastal batteries (long range) and BrahMos missiles at an approximate cost of over Rs 1,700 crore under the Buy (Indian) category.
Bharat Electronics Limited and the Ministry of Defence have also agreed to a new deal worth Rs 1,700 for the purchase of 13 Lynx-U2 Fire Control Systems for the Indian Navy. A naval gun fire control system called Lynx-U2 is able to precisely monitor and engage targets while surrounded by clutter at sea as well as air or surface targets. New Generation Offshore Patrol Vessels being constructed at Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers and Goa Shipyard Limited will have these indigenous fourth-generation systems installed.
According to a statement by the Ministry of Defence, these contacts will generate employment for over 2 lakh man-days over four years. This will include Micro, small and medium enterprises. These contracts will significantly contribute in the government’s initiative for ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ in Defence.
Apart from all these deals, the Defence Ministry also signed a deal with Indian Shipyards for acquiring 11 OPVs under the Buy category was signed with Goa Shipyard Limited and Garden Reach Ship Builders Engineers, Kolkata. Out of these 11 ships, seven will be indigenously designed, developed and manufactured by Goa Shipyard Limited and four by Garden Reach Ship Builders Engineers. The expected delivery of the ships is scheduled to commence from September 2026.
