Following a meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Micron CEO Sanjay Mehrotra, the Gujarat government announced on Wednesday that Micron Technology will invest USD 2.5 billion (₹22,500 crore) to build an ATMP (assembly, test, marking, and packaging) facility in Gujarat’s Sanand GIDC-II.
Gujarat’s Sanand GIDC is a highly industrialised area that is home to numerous domestic and international manufacturing businesses. Micron received the Offer Cum Allotment (OCA) letter from Vice Chairman and Managing Director, GIDC, for the allocation of 93 acres of land within the Sanand GIDC Estate.
According to a press statement, Micron Technology will create an assembly and test facility where it will concentrate on converting wafers into solid-state drives, memory modules, and ball grid array (BGA) integrated circuit packages.
Taking it to Twitter, Gujarat CM mentioned, “Gujarat will make the best contribution to the Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendrabhai Modi’s goal of making India a Semiconductor Manufacturing Hub. In Sanand ₹22,516 crore with an investment. Government of Gujarat has entered into an MoU with Micron Technology, one of the world’s top companies in the semiconductor sector, for setting up a semiconductor assembly, test, marking and packaging plant. Through this project, the construction of semiconductor ecosystem in Gujarat will be greatly accelerated, and also create large-scale employment.”
Union minister Ashwini Vaishnaw also tweeted, “Historic day for India…Thanks to PM @narendramodi Ji’s comprehensive semiconductor mission. MoU signed between Micron and Govt of Gujarat.”
During the meeting the Chief Minister of Gujarat, Bhupendra Patel thanked Micron Technology for choosing Gujarat to set up its flagship semiconductor manufacturing sector.
Notably, the Gujarat Semiconductor Policy (2022-27) was launched in September 2022 for the development of a domestic semiconductor manufacturing ecosystem.
