Over 5 crore income tax returns (ITRs) for income earned in the 2022-23 fiscal have been filed till July 27, the Income Tax Department said on Friday.Taking to Twitter, the department wrote, “We express our gratitude to the taxpayers & tax professionals for helping us reach the milestone of 5 crore Income Tax Returns (ITRs), 3 days early this year, compared to the preceding year!“Over 5 crore ITRs for AY [assessment year] 2023-24 have already been filed till 27th of July this year as compared to 30th of July last year.”We express our gratitude to the taxpayers & tax professionals for helping us reach the milestone of 5 crore Income Tax Returns (ITRs), 3 days early this year, compared to the preceding year! Over 5 crore ITRs for AY 2023-24 have already been filed till 27th of July this year as…— Income Tax India (@IncomeTaxIndia) July 28, 2023The department also said that about 4.46 crore ITRs – about 88% of the total number of ITRs filed – have been e-verified, of which more than 2.69 crore have already been processed.File your ITRs before July 31 as govt not considering deadline extensionThe I-T department, in its Twitter post, reminded everyone to file their income tax returns before the deadline date of July 31, writing, “We urge all those who havent filed ITR for AY 2023-24, to file their ITR at the earliest to avoid last minute rush.”Earlier on July 16, Revenue Secretary Sanjay Malhotra said, “We would like to thank income tax return filers as ITR filing has been at a much faster pace than last year and we would advise them not to wait to the last moment and also not to hope for any extensions. So, I would advise them to file their tax return at the earliest because the deadline of July 31 is approaching fast.”
