In a historic development, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday announced that India’s UPI payment system will soon be usable in France.

The development was announced at an event at La Seine Musicale in Paris where Prime Minister Modi – who is on a two-day state visit to France – addressed the Indian diaspora in the country.

PM Modi further added that the implementation of UPI in France will start from the iconic Eiffel Tower. This will allow Indian tourists to pay in the landmark tourist spot using the rupee.

“India and France have agreed to use UPI in France. I will leave after the agreement. However, it is your job to move forward. Friends, in the coming days its beginning will be made from Eiffel Tower which means that Indian tourists will now be able to make payments in Rupees, through UPI, at Eiffel Tower,” the Prime Minister said.

The Unified Payments Interface is an instant payment system that allows multiple to be connected to a single mobile application, providing many banking features from a single interface.

India’s UPI leading social transformation; India France working together

Commenting on the technological cooperation between India and France, the Prime Minister said, “Be it India’s UPI or other digital platforms, they have brought a huge social transformation in the country and I am happy that India and France are also working together in direction.”

The Prime Minister said that the strategic partnership between India and France, which is deeply rooted in history, is of great significance in dealing with the bilateral challenges of the 21st century.

UPI is already adopted in countries such as Nepal, Bhutan, and the UAE, and more countries such as Singapore have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to adopt the system.
