India in view of special relationships with Singapore has allowed the export of rice to Singapore to meet the food security requirements of the Southeast nation. According to the statement by the Ministry of External Affairs, India on August 27 introduced additional safeguards on exports of basmati rice so as to prevent exports of non-basmati white rice, which is currently under the prohibited category.

Taking it to social media handle, Official Spokesperson of the Ministry of External Affairs of India, Arindam Bagchi announced, “India and Singapore enjoy a very close strategic partnership, characterized by shared interests, close economic ties and strong people-to-people connect. In view of this special relationship, India has decided to allow the export of rice to meet the food security requirements of Singapore.”

“Formal orders in this regard will be issued shortly,” Bagchi added.

It is to be noted here, Singapore in the latest round of talks had requested to relax the ban on the export of rice and urged to import at least 110,000 tonnes of grain.

Recently, Central government on July 20 imposed a ban on the export of non-basmati white rice from the country following a heavy monsoon resulted in significant damage to crops and the price of the grain in the domestic market shot up by 3%.

According to the sources, Singapore, Philippines and Indonesia are among the countries which have requested India to grant exemptions from the ban and allow the export of rice.
