Google’s AI chatbot Bard is now open to selected users in the United States and the United Kingdom amidst the massive success of ChatGPT, an artificial intelligence chatbot created by OpenAI, launched in November 2022. Immediately after the success of ChatGPT, Google revealed that it would introduce an artificial intelligence chatbot technology named Bard in the coming weeks. Finally, after months of public discussion about chatbots powered by artificial intelligence, Google is launching its Bard AI platform to a select set of users.
After several years of development, Google announced on Tuesday that it would make Bard available to more users in the United States and the United Kingdom. UK and US users can sign up for a waitlist at bard.google.com and then access the new AI platform. The move ratchets up the rivalry between Google and Microsoft Corp. for supremacy in the development of advanced artificial intelligence systems capable of generating human-like text responses. The Alphabet inc., the parent company of Google, stated that Bard is still an “early experiment” and would offer on its own site, bard.google.com, rather than within its existing services.
According to The Wall Street Journal, Bard is built to respond to textual requests with information derived from sources such as Wikipedia, and it is capable of handling follow-up queries in a conversational format.
While using Bard, although there are a few sample questions provided, users are free to enter any information in the text area. After loading the solution, Bard delivers it all at once. Google claims that Bard operates similarly to existing generative AI chatbots, despite the fact that it does not seem to be creating a response word by word. It creates the next word according to the previous ones.
The response can also be rated with a thumbs up or downvote, the chat can be restarted, or the ‘Google It’ button at the bottom of the answer can be clicked to access Google’s search engine.
However, Bard lacks footnotes referencing web sources in contrast to Microsoft’s Bing chatbot, which might help you validate the accuracy of the solution. If Bard’s response isn’t satisfactory, Google enables you to view additional results for the same query. Click the “view other drafts” icon in the top right corner to display more responses.
To compete with its rivals, Google is coming up with its Bard AI with peculiar features based on safety and concerns about the generation of false information by the AI. Google’s work on Bard is driven by its AI Principles, with a particular emphasis on quality and security.
To improve its systems, Google uses human evaluation and feedback. In order to keep up conversations beneficial and relevant, it has also put in place guardrails such as limiting the number of exchanges in a conversation.
Since their competitors’ AI-based chatbot technology was sometimes inconsistent and occasionally faulty, Google is taking a careful approach to Bard’s rollout. Google is aware that LLMs (Large Language Models) occasionally produce inaccurate or misleading information. Therefore, Google gives you the option to pick from a few different drafts of Bard’s reply to help alleviate these problems. By asking more queries or requesting different solutions, you can continue the conversation with Bard.
Since 2015, Google has been creating the technology that powers Bard. Yet, unlike OpenAI and Microsoft’s chatbots, Bard has not been made available to a wider public because of concern about producing unreliable information and potential prejudices towards particular groups. Google is aware of these problems and wants to launch Bard in an ethical manner.
The public version of Bard, according to Google CEO, Sundar Pichai, will operate on a “lightweight model,” but some staff have been experimenting with a more advanced internal version termed “Big Bard.”
The initial model will be restricted to text – it will not currently respond to images or audio – and you will not be able to use it for coding, but Google promises that these features will be available soon. Google will gradually develop Bard, and users will be able to provide written comments on their experiences.
Though, for now, access to BARD AI is available only to users in the US and UK, Google has plans to expand the service of its chatbot to more countries and languages. However, they didn’t come up with a date for launch in other countries yet.
