Compressed natural gas (CNG) prices were raised by Rs 1 per kilogram across the National Capital Region (NCR) on Thursday, according to Indraprastha Gas Limited (IGL).CNG price hiked by Rs 1 per kg in NCRThe state-owned natural gas distribution company said CNG would now cost Rs 75.59 per kg in Delhi, up from Rs 74.59 previously. The revised rates in Noida and Greater Noida stand at Rs 81.20 per kg and Rs 80.20 per kg respectively, while the new price in Ghaziabad and Hapur is Rs 80.20 per kg.The price hike comes as international energy costs remain elevated, pushing up input costs for domestic gas companies.“Rising gas prices in the international market and increased dependence on imported LNG continue putting pressure on domestic prices,” an IGL spokesperson said. The increased CNG rates are likely to directly impact commuters relying on cabs, auto-rickshaws and buses running on clean fuel. Transport associations said they may need to raise fares to offset the added CNG costs.“Operational expenses have gone up with fuel prices climbing. Some fare correction is needed for vehicles to remain viable,” said Shyamlal Gola, Secretary of the Delhi Auto Rickshaw Sangh.Experts on CG price hikeExperts also warned that the price hike of CNG could feed inflation in other sectors. “When transportation overhead rises, those costs get transferred through the supply chain,” said Sunil Kumar Sinha of India Ratings.Vegetable vendors at major Mandis like Azadpur have already highlighted pressure to hike rates amid elevated freight charges. “Were paying nearly 35% more to transport produce. Retail prices may rise soon,” said a trader. As clean fuels grow increasingly expensive, the potential inflationary effect presents a policy conundrum for authorities aiming to improve air quality by promoting CNG usage. Maintaining affordable public transport while also supporting environmental goals remains a key economic challenge.
