As per the statement of the Ministry of External Affairs, on Monday, India marked a key milestone in its G20 presidency by hosting the 100th successful group meeting. The 100th G20 meeting went underway in Varanasi. With this India has hosted 100 G20 meetings in 41 cities, covering 28 states and Union Territories in India.

The Ministry of External Affairs said in a statement that, “G20 members and guest nations have shown tremendous support for India’s G20 leadership in the run-up to the New Delhi leaders’ summit on September 9 and 10 for its inclusive, ambitious, action-oriented, and decisive agenda.

The G20 members and guests coming together under India’s presidency to jointly confront current global concerns is attested to by the wide-ranging, substantial, and passionate participation in India’s G20 meetings, it said in a statement. The ministry also reported that over 12,300 delegates from over 110 countries have witnessed the G20 meetings in India so far. Ukrainians were also among them.

According to those who know the subject, over 75 percent of global commerce, almost two-thirds of the world’s population and about 85 percent of the world’s GDP are all represented by the G20 members.

The MEA in a statement said that ‘in-person’ participation, in India’s G20 presidency, is the biggest ever.

S. Jaishankar, the minister of external affairs, tweeted, “100 meetings in 41 places; 12000+ delegates from across 111 nationalities. The New India is also ‘global ready’ as the world becomes ‘India ready.'” The organization, which has been led by India since December 1 of last year, is holding its 100th meeting of Agricultural Chief Scientists (MACS) in Varanasi. According to the MEA, other events taking place on Monday include the second Health Working Group in Goa, the second Digital Economy Working Group in Hyderabad, and the Space Economy Leaders’ Precursor Meeting in Shillong.

In addition, the MEA reported that India will host foreign visitors for more than 200 G20-related meetings in almost 60 places throughout the country, the largest geographic distribution of any president.

The MEA reports that eight finance track workstreams, 11 engagement groups, all 13 sherpa track working groups, and four projects have begun substantive interaction. Under India’s G20 leadership, new working groups on disaster risk reduction (DRR), “Startup 20” involvement, and the Chief Science Advisors’ Roundtable (CSAR) program have all been operationalised.

Three ministerial meetings are said to have already taken place. India will hold the presidency till November 30.

Countries included in G20

The Group of Twenty (G20) comprises 19 countries (Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Republic of Korea, Mexico, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Türkiye, United Kingdom, and United States) and the European Union.

Meetings held during G20 in India

The first finance ministers and central bank governors meeting (FMCBG) was held in Bengaluru on February 24-25, the G20 foreign minister meeting was held in New Delhi on March 1 and 2 and the second FMCBG meeting was held in Washington DC on April 12 and 13. Apart from this, the ministry also said that FMM and sherpa meetings saw record participation from all delegations which have been held in Udaipur in December last year and another in Kumarakom in March, this year.

Along with this, the Voice of Global South Summit held in January was attended by 125 countries, including 18 at heads of state and other ministerial levels.
