New Delhi: The Economic Survey 2023-24, presented by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman in Parliament today, has underscored significant improvements in India's employment metrics following the pandemic-induced disruptions. According to the survey, the all-India annual unemployment rate among individuals aged 15 years and above, based on usual status, has shown a consistent decline over recent years.

The survey highlights a concurrent increase in the labour force participation rate and the worker-to-population ratio, indicating a broader recovery in employment across urban and rural areas. It notes that even under the stringent criteria of the current weekly status, employment levels have rebounded significantly post-pandemic.

Rise in female labour force participation rate

From a gender perspective, the Economic Survey reports a noteworthy rise in the female labour force participation rate over the past six years. Starting from 23.3% in 2017-18, the participation of rural women has notably increased, reaching 37% in 2022-23. This trend underscores a positive shift towards greater economic participation and empowerment among women in rural areas.

Aimed at boosting employment

The survey's findings suggest that policy interventions and economic reforms aimed at boosting employment and empowering women have yielded positive outcomes, contributing to a more inclusive and resilient labour market. Minister Sitharaman emphasized the importance of sustaining these gains through targeted policies that foster equitable economic opportunities and address structural challenges in the employment sector.
