A senior official on Thursday said, ‘Tata Group-owned Air India has placed an order for 840 planes with Airbus and Boeing, including the option to acquire 370 aircrafts. He mentioned that this order is going to be a landmark in the Indian aviation history.’
Air India’s Chief Commercial and Transformation Officer Nipun Aggarwal made this announcement a day after the airline said it has placed a firm order for 470 aircraft – 250 from Airbus and 220 from Boeing.
CCTO Nipun Aggarwal mentioned this in his Linkedin profile that the airline is humbled by the excitement generated across the world by the airline’s aircraft order.
It should be noted that Air India announced on Tuesday that it has placed a firm order with Airbus for 250 planes and 220 planes with Boeing, making it the largest single-tranche commercial aviation deal in history. According to CCTO Nipun Aggarwal’s post, the deal could grow even larger because it includes the option to purchase 370 more jets, bringing the total number to 840.
The order includes 470 firm aircraft as well as 370 options and purchase rights that will be obtained from Airbus and Boeing over the next decade. The Airbus firm order includes 210 A320/321Neo/XLR and 40 A350-900/1000, according to his post.
“Boeing has placed a firm order for 190 B737Max, 20 B787s, and ten B777s. We have also contracted with CFM International, Rolls-Royce, and GE Aerospace for long-term engine maintenance” he added.
Meanwhile, it is not clear when deliveries of these planes will begin. Airbus has stated that they will start delivering the A350s by this year and A321neos could begin next year.
He also mentioned in a statement that “This order demonstrates the Tata Group’s vision and aspiration to transform Air India into a world-class airline that connects India non-stop to every major city in the world. This order also demonstrates the enormous economic potential unleashed by the privatisation of Air India. He also added, this order of 840 aircraft has been a climax of a fascinating journey that began almost two years ago starting with the privatisation of Air India.
The last order was placed for 111 planes back in 2005, which consisted of 68 from Boeing and 43 from Airbus. The deal was worth 10.8 billion USD.
Air India revealed on Tuesday that it had placed orders with Airbus and Boeing for 470 aircraft, including 260 widebody aircraft. The wide-body aircraft ordered include 40 Airbus A350s, 20 Boeing 787s, and 10 Boeing 777-9s. 210 Airbus A320, 321 Neo, and 190 single-aisle Boeing 737 MAX are among the narrow-bodies.
When the Boeing-Air India agreement was announced, President Joe Biden stated that he and Prime Minister Narendra Modi were eager to strengthen connections between India and the US. This declaration comes after the US-India collaboration on Critical and Emerging Technology (iCET) was officially launched last month.
Since 2006, Air India has not purchased any aircraft, which resulted in the airline losing market share in both the domestic and international segments. Air India needs capacity to regain market share and expand its presence in the country and beyond, which the new aircraft will provide. An existing fleet of Air India and Air India Express planes is also due for replacement with modern planes that are not only more environmentally friendly but also use 15 percent less fuel, resulting in a higher bottom line.
