New Delhi: Maruti Suzuki reigns supreme in India's car market, consistently topping sales charts with budget-friendly offerings like the WagonR, Swift, and Alto K10. While these cars boast impressive fuel efficiency and affordability, a crucial aspect deserves attention: their safety performance.

Global NCAP crash tests reveal safety concerns

Recent Global NCAP crash tests paint a concerning picture for these best-sellers. All three vehicles – WagonR, Swift, and Alto K10 – received alarmingly low safety ratings, raising serious questions about passenger protection in the event of a collision.

WagonR

The WagonR, crowned India's best-selling car in FY24 with over 200,000 units sold, scored a meager 1-star rating for adult safety and a dismal 0-star rating for child safety in the Global NCAP tests. This is especially concerning considering its starting ex-showroom price of Rs 5,54,500.

Swift

Following closely behind the WagonR is the Swift, with sales exceeding 195,000 units in FY24. However, its safety rating mirrors the WagonR's – a meagre 1-star each for adult and child safety. This raises a red flag, particularly with a starting ex-showroom price of Rs 5,99,450.

Alto K10

Even the more affordable Alto K10, with over 111,000 units sold in FY24, exhibits a troubling safety record. While it manages a slightly better 2-star rating for adult safety, it still falls short with a concerning 0-star rating for child safety. This, at a starting ex-showroom price of Rs 3.90 lakh, raises questions about prioritizing safety within budget constraints.

Fuel efficiency and affordability are undeniable considerations when buying a car in India. However, these factors shouldn't overshadow the critical aspect of safety. The low ratings of these popular Maruti cars highlight the need for Indian consumers to prioritize safety features when making their vehicle choices.

Global NCAP ratings are a valuable tool for car buyers, offering insights into crashworthiness and passenger protection. By prioritizing safety alongside other factors, consumers can make informed decisions that safeguard themselves and their loved ones on the road.
