Traffic Rules 2023: In a bid to enhance road safety and curb the alarming rate of road accidents, India has enforced stringent traffic regulations.

These rules extend to teen driving, where minors (those under 18 years of age) are unequivocally prohibited from operating cars and other motor vehicles. Should they be caught flouting this rule, they face severe penalties, and so do their parents or guardians.

Penalties for Teen Driving

If a minor is apprehended while operating a vehicle, the vehicle's guardian or owner is held accountable. This comes with a provision of 3 years of imprisonment and a fine amounting to INR 25,000. Furthermore, the vehicle's registration may be revoked for a year. Notably, the minor involved will be ineligible to obtain a driving license until they reach the age of 25, whereas, under standard circumstances, a driving license could be acquired at 18.

Necessity of This Regulation

The driving skills of teen drivers are often underdeveloped, leading to an increased likelihood of errors and, consequently, accidents. Their inexperience makes it challenging to discern potential road hazards. Additionally, minors frequently adopt a careless approach to driving, disregarding traffic regulations, further elevating the accident risk. Consequently, it is imperative to restrict minors from operating motor vehicles to enhance road safety and protect young lives.
