Tesla ‘Made in India’ comes an inch closer; to start ops next year

Tesla is likely to begin with initial investment of $2 billion in any of the plants in India and will also involve with Indian manufacturers for spare parts, making batteries in a bid for cost-effective solutions.

The leading American electric vehicle company Tesla has been making news since it revealed its aspirations for India. 

According to a recent development, Elon Musk's Tesla is probably going to introduce the most technologically advanced EVs to India soon. As per reports, the car manufacturer and the Indian government have concluded their final negotiations, and operations are scheduled to begin in 2024.

The announcement for deal between India and Tesla come during the Vibrant Gujarat Summit in January. According to the people familiar with the matter, Tesla is considering the infrastructure related to automobile industry in Maharashtra, Gujarat and Tamil Nadu. 

It is also said that Tesla is likely to begin with initial investment of $2 billion in any of the plants in India and will also involve with Indian manufacturers for spare parts, making batteries in a bid for cost-effective solutions.
However, no official statement has come regarding the deal.

Meanwhile, Union Minister Piyush Goyal, who visited Tesla plant at Fremont, California last week and stated that the Tesla would be doubling its auto components imports from India.

After visiting Tesla plant, Piyush Goyal tweeted, “Also proud to see the growing importance of Auto component suppliers from India in the Tesla EV supply chain.”

The car manufacturer is planning to launch ‘The Model 3,’ its entry-level trim, in the global market once operations get underway. It is priced at approximately USD 39,990 (nearly Rs 30 lakh). However, the final price may be between Rs 70 lakh and Rs 80 lakh after customs charges and taxes are deducted, according to reports.
