Converting petrol and diesel cars into electric ones is completely legal in India. For this, you have to get an electric motor vehicle retro-kit fitted in your old car. Vehicles that have been used for commercial activities, such as loading vehicles, auto rickshaws, etc., cannot be converted to electric vehicles if they are more than 15 years old. If you do not convert the right car to electric, you may have to pay a hefty fine. There are two types of retro fit kits available to convert a petrol car into electric. One is based on AC conversion and the other on DC conversion. If you install an AC conversion kit in your car, then it will cost you Rs 4 to 10 lakh. If you convert your car into electric with a DC conversion kit, then their cost ranges from Rs 2 to 5 lakh.
