New Delhi: The national capital, Delhi, has emerged as a front-runner in electric vehicle (EV) sales, achieving a significant milestone by contributing 19.5% to the total vehicle sales in December. This marks the highest-ever monthly contribution among all states in the country, showcasing the success of the Delhi EV Policy launched in 2020.

Unprecedented Success in EV Sales

Delhi Finance Minister Kailash Gahlot proudly announced this achievement, highlighting the city's commitment to cleaner and greener transportation. Taking to social media platform X, Gahlot shared the news and stated that Delhi recorded a remarkable 19.5% share in EV sales out of the overall vehicles sold in December 2023.

2023 Overview and Policy Goals

In the year 2023, Delhi witnessed a total of 6,57,312 vehicle registrations, out of which 73,610 were electric vehicles. The success is attributed to the visionary Delhi EV Policy, with a key goal of achieving 25% of all new vehicle registrations in Delhi by 2024.

Policy Extension and Incentives

The Delhi cabinet, led by Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, approved the extension of the existing Delhi Electric Vehicle Policy until December 31, 2023. This extension ensures that all incentives and subsidies under the policy continue to drive the adoption of EVs in the region.

Objectives of Delhi EV Policy

The overarching objective of the Delhi EV Policy is to enhance air quality and establish a comprehensive supply-chain ecosystem for electric vehicles. With a target to deploy 25% of all new vehicles as battery-operated by 2024, the policy aligns with the vision of a sustainable and eco-friendly Delhi.

Switch Delhi Campaign and Environmental Awareness

Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal launched the Switch Delhi campaign in February 2021 to raise awareness about the environmental benefits of EVs and propel Delhi towards a pollution-free future. The success of EV sales in December reflects the growing acceptance of green vehicles and brings Delhi a step closer to achieving its ambitious targets.

As Delhi leads the way in EV adoption, it sets an inspiring example for other states in India to embrace sustainable and eco-conscious transportation.
