New Delhi: Maruti Suzuki, a prominent name in the automotive industry, has witnessed a significant transformation in its safety ratings, marking a pivotal moment in the realm of vehicle safety standards. Formerly plagued by low ratings in the Global NCAP assessments, Maruti Suzuki cars are now earning accolades under the Bharat NCAP, garnering an impressive 5-star safety rating.

Revolutionizing safety standards

Historically, Maruti Suzuki faced scrutiny for its vehicles' safety performance in the Global NCAP evaluations, often receiving a mere 1-star rating. However, a paradigm shift has occurred with the introduction of the Bharat NCAP (India New Car Assessment Programme), a homegrown initiative aimed at evaluating car safety on Indian roads. The latest reports from Business Today indicate that numerous Maruti models have achieved a remarkable 5-star safety rating in these assessments, signifying a notable improvement in safety features and standards.

Augmented safety measures

In August 2023, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) unveiled the indigenous crash test program, prompting various automotive manufacturers to subject their vehicles to rigorous safety evaluations under the Bharat NCAP. Maruti Suzuki took proactive steps by submitting popular models such as the SUV Brezza and Grand Vitara, alongside the premium hatchback Baleno, for testing. These vehicles emerged triumphant, securing a coveted 5-star safety rating, affirming Maruti Suzuki's commitment to prioritizing customer safety.

Elevating industry standards

The initiation of crash testing procedures under the Bharat NCAP in December 2023 marked a watershed moment in India's automotive safety landscape. Notably, Maruti Suzuki's achievement parallels the success of other renowned brands like Tata, Hyundai, and Mahindra, with their vehicles also anticipated to receive 5-star safety ratings. India's establishment of a domestic car crash test facility underscores its alignment with global standards, positioning the nation as a frontrunner in enhancing vehicle safety measures.

Criteria for safety assessment

Under the Bharat NCAP, cars undergo comprehensive evaluations based on three critical parameters: adult passenger protection, child protection, and safety assist technology. The assessments adhere to stringent guidelines, including impact testing at a predetermined speed of 64 km/h by colliding vehicles with stationary objects or pillars. This meticulous evaluation process ensures that vehicles meet rigorous safety benchmarks tailored to India's unique road and traffic conditions.

Maruti Suzuki's attainment of a 5-star safety rating in the India NCAP heralds a new era of enhanced safety standards in the automotive sector. With a focus on prioritizing passenger safety and adhering to stringent evaluation criteria, Maruti Suzuki sets a commendable precedent for the industry. As the automotive landscape continues to evolve, the commitment to advancing safety measures remains paramount, ensuring a safer driving experience for all.
