Vat Savitri Vrat is considered one of the most auspicious fasts in the Hindu religion. It is believed that if a Hindu woman observes this fast, her husband gets blessed with good fortune and a healthy life. According to legends, it is believed that Savitri performed this fast and tricked Lord Yama into forgiving her husband’s life.  

This year, according to Vedic Panchang, the fast will be observed on June 6, as per Udaya Tithi. Amavasya Tithi will begin on June 6 at 07:54 PM and will end on June 6 at 06:07 PM.

It is believed that women should avoid some practices on this day as it could bring misfortune. Here are some of them:

Do’s for Vat Savitri Vrat

  • Women observing fast should wake up early in the morning and offer Argya to Lord Sun (Surya dev).
  • Women should wear traditional clothes and dress accordingly as married by doing ‘Solah Shringar.’
  • People observing the fast should offer bananas and worship the Banyan tree for the long life of their husbands.
  • Also recite the legend, if observing fast, and tie a white thread around the Banyan tree.
  • Take blessings from elders and offer those sweets and money.
  • Though different rituals are followed by people according to their customs, these are some common practices that they should follow.

Don’t for Vat Savitri Vrat

  • Women shouldn't dress in black, white, or blue.
  • On the day of Vat Savitri, they ought not to give clothing donations to widows.
  • Since cutting your hair is unlucky on this fortunate day, avoid doing so.
  • Avoid making fun of or arguing with someone.
  • Women should abstain from food and drink before praying to the Lord.
  • On the day of Vat Savitri, women should refrain from consuming any Tamsik food.
