Shardiya Navratri, which falls in Ashwin month according to Hindu Panchang is starting from October 15. Navratri is among one of the important festivals, which gets celebrated across the nation. During these nine days of Navratri, Goddess Durga is worshiped in nine different forms.

Navratri get started on Pratipada (the first day) of Shukla Paksha of Ashwin month. This year, Shardiya Navratri will start from October 15 and will end on October 24. Ghatasthapana (kalashsthapana), which is considered one of the major rituals, is done on the first day of Navratri.

Here’s the auspicious date & time for Ghatasthapana

Ghatasthapana is one of the significant rituals during Navratri, that marks the beginning of nine days festivity. To do Ghatasthapana during a specific time at the start of Navratri, our scriptures provide clear rules and instructions. Ghatasthapana is an invocation of Goddess Shakti, and as our scriptures warn, doing it at the wrong moment may invoke the goddess’ anger.

According to mythology, Ghatasthapana is prohibited during Amavasya and night time.

The first one-third of the day is considered auspicious for Ghatsthapana. But if, someone if not able to perform the ritual during assigned time, it can also be done during Abhijit Muhurata. Nakshatra Chitra and Vaidhriti Yoga during Ghatasthapana is prohibited. It is believed unsuspicious.

However, it is said that one should perform the Ghatsthapana in the first one-third day.

Ghatasthapana Muhurta is considered auspicious during Abhijit Muhurta on Pratipada Tithi.

  • Ghatasthapana Muhurta is during the prohibited Chitra Nakshatra.

Ghatasthapana: How is it done?

A pot made of clay, silver, ashta metal, brass or other metals is installed in the north-east corner during the auspicious time on the first day of Navratri for Ghatasthapana.

After this, add some soil and then add barley in it, then spread one more layer of soil and once again add barley. Spread the layer of soil again. Now sprinkle water on it.

Before doing Ghatasthapana, place a plank on a piece of wood, spread a red cloth on it and establish Ghat on it. Make swastika with roli or sandalwood on the ghat. Tie kalawa on ghat. Make sure to put some rice at the bottom of the Kalash and put coin, betel nut, Panchpallav (mango leaves), Saptam Mritika (soil) inside the Kalash.

You can also offer sweets, prasad while performing puja. First of all worship Ganesha and then pray the Goddess Durga.
