Goddess Shailputri at the age of sixteen was extremely beautiful and was blessed with fair complexion and it is believed that due to her extreme fair complexion she was known as Goddess Mahagauri.

Each form of goddess owns a particular planet, as per astrology and it is believed that the planet Rahu is governed by Goddess Mahagauri. She represents inner beauty and purity of every living being.

Goddess Mahagauri and Goddess Shailputri both ride bulls, which is why she is sometimes referred to as Vrisharudha (वृषारूढ़ा). Goddess Mahagauri depicts four hands. She holds Trishul with one right hand while maintaining the Abhaya Mudra with the other. She holds Damaru in one left hand while maintaining the Varada Mudra with the other left hand.

Due to her extremely fair complexion, Goddess Mahagauri is compared with the conch, the moon and white flower of Kunda. As she adorns white clothes, she is also known as Shwetambardhara.
