Goddess Parvati incarnated as Goddess Katyayani in order to defeat the monster Mahishasura. According to scriptures, it was Goddess Parvati's most violent incarnation. In this form, Goddess Parvati is also referred to as the Warrior Goddess in this form.

Each form of Goddess governs some planet and it is believed that Goddess Katyayani rules over the planet Brihaspati.

Iconography

Goddess Katyayani is portrayed as having four hands and riding a majestic lion. Goddess Katyayani holds a sword and a lotus in her left hands while maintaining the Abhaya and Varada mudras in her right hands.

Goddess Parvati is known as Katyayani because, according to religious believes, she was born at the residence of the sage Katya.

Mantra: Om Devi Katyayanyai Namah (ॐ देवी कात्यायन्यै नमः॥)
