Sawan is considered one of the most auspicious months to seek the blessings of Lord Shiva. According to mythological beliefs, it is said that one should offer water to ‘Shivlinga’. According to the scriptures, there are certain beliefs that one should follow while worshipping.
It is also said that if one follows some rules while offering water (Jal) to Lord Shiva, he/she gets blessed with good fortune. Here are some practices that can be followed:
In which direction to offer water?
Astrologically, it is believed that one should offer water on Shivling facing north direction because the north direction is considered to be the left side of Lord Shiva which is dedicated to Goddess Parvati. By offering water facing this direction, one gets the blessings of both Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati.
Which vessel to offer water?
The most important thing to keep in mind while offering water on Shivling is which vessel you should offer water with. The best vessels for offering water are considered to be copper, silver and bronze. One should never use a vessel made of steel to offer water. The best vessel for offering water is made of copper. Therefore, it is best to offer water with this vessel. But, refrain from using milk in the copper vessel as milk becomes poisonous after reacting with the metal.
Never offer water quickly on Shivlinga
It is also mentioned in the scriptures that Lord Shiva loves ‘Jalabhishek.’ Therefore, while doing ‘Abhishek,’ offer water slowly.
Posture while doing ‘Jalabhishek’
It is important to remember that you should do ‘Jalabhishek’ to Shivlinga when seated. One should also not conduct ‘Rudrabhishek’ while standing. It is improper for the water to splash upon our feet when it falls on Lord Shiva when we offer it while standing.
Do not mix anything else with water
Never add any other material to the water vessel while doing ‘Jalabhishek’ on Shivlinga. Mixing any material like flowers, Akshat or Roli in water ends its purity. Therefore, to get the blessings of Lord Shiva, water should always be offered alone. But a few drops of holy rivers like Narmada or Ganga should definitely be mixed in the water.
Offer water after offering the object
If you offer honey, milk, curd or any kind of juice to Lord Shiva, then do not mix it in water. Offer any object to God separately and then offer water.
Use only desi cow milk
Only raw milk of pure desi Indian cow should be offered on Shivling, do not offer any other type of milk at all.
It is also believed that one gets the desired happiness if one worships Lord Shiva with full dedication in Sawan and Shravan maas.
