Pitru Paksha 2023: What need to be done on Tritiya Shradh

Tritiya Shradh is performed for those deceased family members who died on Tritiya Tithi. On this day, Shradh can be performed on Tritiya Tithi of either Shukla Paksha or Krishna Paksha. Tritiya Shradh is also known as Teej Shradh of Pitru Paksha.

Pitru Paksha Shradh muhurtas like Kutup, Rauhin etc. are considered auspicious for completing these Shradhs. It is believed that one should complete all Shradh related rituals by afternoon. Tarpan is offered at the end of Shradh.

According to Hindu Panchang, tarpan for Tritiya Shradh will be done on October 1, 2023, which fall on Sunday.

Tritiya Shradh will be performed on October 1, 2023. As per Panchang, Tithi will start on October 01, 2023 at 09:41 AM and will end on October 02, 2023 at 07:36 AM.

The very next day Chaturthi Shradh will be performed to seek blessings of the ancestors. Chaturthi Tithi will start on October 02, 2023 at 07:36 AM and will end at 06:11 AM on October 03, 2023.

Shraddha rituals consist of following main activities:

• Vishwadeva Sthapana
• Pindadan
• Tarpan
• Feeding the Brahmin

Offering the ancestors, a pinda (a rounded stack of the offering) made of rice, cow’s milk, ghee, sugar, and honey is known as a pindadaan. It should be done with true devotion devotion, feelings, and reverence for the departed soul.

Tarpan is the ritual offering of water flavoured with white flour, black sesame, barley, and kusha grass. It is believed that through tarpan we can satisfy the ancestors.

The rituals while performing Shradh gets completed by feeding the Brahmin. Before giving food to the Brahmin, offerings are also made to the crows, cow, and dog.
