What is Gajachchhaya Yoga? How is it connected to Pitru Paksha Shradh?

Gajachchhaya Yoga is considered one of the highly auspicious times for performing Shradh, which occurs during Pitru Paksha. In 2023, there is no Gajachchhaya Yoga.

Notably, the Sun transits through Hasta Nakshatra once in a year, which generally happens during Pitru Paksha. The combination when the Sun is in Hasta Nakshatra and the Moon is in Magha Nakshatra during Trayodashi Tithi of Pitru Paksha is known as Gajachchhaya Yoga.

Similarly, another combination is, when the Sun is in Hasta Nakshatra and the Moon in Hasta Nakshatra during Amavasya Tithi of Pitru Paksha is also known as Gajachchhaya Yoga. Hence, there are chances that there could be one or two Gajachchhaya Yoga during Pitru Paksha. This type of auspicious combination occurs either on Trayodashi Tithi or on Amavasya Tithi.

It is also believed that Gajachchhaya Yoga is considered auspicious when it falls during day time. It does not have any value if it falls during night time. However, irrespective of time, it is known as Gajachchhaya Yoga.
