During Pitru Paksha, Shashthi Shradh is performed for those deceased family members who died on Shashthi Tithi of either Shukla Paksha or Krishna Paksha. Shashthi Shradh is also known as Chhath Shradh among people. Pitru Paksha Shradh falls in Parvan Shradh, which is among one of the five types of Shradhs. This year, Shashthi Shradh will be observed on Wednesday, October 4, 2023.

Muhurtas like Kutup, Rauhin etc. are considered auspicious for completing these Shradhs. It is believed that one should perform all the rituals related to Shradh by the end of the afternoon. Tarpan is among one of the rituals which is offered at the end of Shradh to the ancestors.

Days when Shradh can be performed during a year

People generally believe that Shradh for the deceased ancestors can be performed in Pitru Paksha only. But according to mythology or Shashtras, there are about 96 days in a year, which are suggested for performing Shradh, including Pitru Paksha. Here are some of the important days that are considered to be good for conducting the rituals for the ancestors.

Here’s the days, which are believed to seek blessings of ancestors and perform Shradhs.

  • 12 Amavasya days
  • 12 Sankranti –  when the Sun enters the next zodiac sign (Rashi)
  • 15 days of Pitru Paksha (that are 15 days of Mahalaya)
  • 12 days of Vaidhriti Yoga
  • 12 days of Vyatipata Yoga
  • 14 Manvadi Tithis or Manvantaras
  • Purvedyu, Ashtaka and Anvashtaka days
  • 4 Yugadi Days (i.e. Krita, Treta, Dwapar, Kali)
