Significance of performing Shradh during Pitru Paksha

According to the Garuda Purana, the soul begins its journey to Yamapuri thirteen days after death and it takes seventeen days for it to complete the journey.

The soul continues through Yamapuri for an additional eleven months, arriving at the court of Yamaraj only in the twelfth month. It lacks of food and water for a duration of eleven months. It is believed that if the elder son and other family members’ do Pindadan, tarpan and fulfil the soul’s needs on its trip till it enters the Yamaraj’s court.

Therefore, Shradh rituals are highly valued during the first year after death. Performing Shradh with complete devotion also keeps you away from Pitra Dosh.

After one or two days after Ganesh Visarjan, which is also known as Anant Chaturdashi, Pitru Paksha begins. Mahalaya Paksha is another name for Pitru Paksha. Sarvapitri Amavasya or Mahalaya Amavasya are two names for the final day of Pitru Paksha, which is one of the most important days of Pitru Paksha. If the death date of the deceased person in the family is not known then his or her Shradh can be performed on Sarvapitri Amavasya.
